It doesn't matter what your condition. Getting movement in your life is possible!

The general benefit of exercise is a decrease in the risk of many chronic diseases; it helps build healthy bones, joints and muscles, reduces stress, and anxiety, and improves general physical and psychological well being.

Decreased risk of developing and/or lessen the physical impact of:

  • Heart Disease
  • Stroke
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Colon and Breast Cancer
  • High Cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Arthritis
  • Falls
  • Physical consequence of movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease
  • All musculoskeletal injuries (such as back and neck pain)

Exercise helps you to build healthy bones, muscles and joints

  • By building strength through resistance exercise, muscle strength is maintained or regained if lost through injury or inactivity (deconditioning).
  • By decreasing the rate of osteopenia (decreased bone density) through performing weight bearing exercise like walking/ running/ weight training/ step ups/ lunges/ squats.
  • By doing full range of movement exercise or movement through full bending and straightening (like pilates exercise), joint range is maintained or restored if lost through injury or inactivity.
  • By performing balance or stability exercise (pilates or functional strengthening exercises, like using weights in positions that you use in everyday life, with combination movements that are also used daily) your reactions and responses to external forces (like being knocked by someone or slipping on a mat) are improved.

Exercise reduces stress, depression and anxiety and improves psychological well-being

When we exercise the body releases endorphins (the body’s own pain killer and feel-good drug). Our focus is centred on performing the exercise and not on our many worries. Our hormonal system is stimulated helping us to feel balanced in ourselves.

NB: Many of our unexplained mood changes are a result of imbalances in our body’s hormones.

Exercise reduces the impact of social isolation

When we exercise we are much more likely to be interacting with our community, be it through a supervised exercise session like at Spring Physio Gym or simply out for a walk at your local park.

Exercise enhances sport or (physical) recreational performance and increases the feeling of resilience

You function better when you are stronger and have increased fitness. You feel better, you move better, you perform better. You will feel less apprehensive about participating in physical activities, so you feel confident about doing more with your life.

What a wonderful feeling!!!!

If exercise is so good why do some people feel worse after exercising?

Everyone can benefit from exercise. The problems arise when the exercise performed is not appropriate.

Injuries can easily be caused by either doing:

  1. Appropriate exercise at an inappropriate frequency and/or intensity for your current level of fitness.
    • For example going too hard, too soon, too often (commence running but starting with 10km 5 times a week).
    • Problems with doing exercise infrequently. If you increase the intensity of the exercise but don’t train often enough the body doesn't adapt appropriately so the level of exertion becomes too much for the body even though you believe you have progressed at the correct rate. This is under-training.
  2. Appropriate frequency and intensity for fitness level but inappropriate type of exercise for your medical or injury history. eg Doing the wrong type of exercise, like rowing, if you have a slipped disc.
  3. Inappropriate exercise for injury at inappropriate frequency and or intensity. This is a very high risk version of exercise.

With all these risks it is not surprising people avoid exercise altogether.

The problem with avoiding exercise is that there are health risks to not exercising altogether. This is where professional supervision, assessment of injury and an exercise program designed by a physiotherapist is a great solution.

At Spring Physio Gym we help you with the correct exercises at the precise frequency and intensity and perform them under supervision until you are safely managing your program.

Your body is constantly changing. If you can adapt, you can manage, reduce or even remove pain or discomfort.
